SYRACUSE, NY - The Syracuse women's lacrosse team will play five teams that advanced to the Elite Eight last season and eight regular-season home games in 2003. Syracuse will host the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship on May 16 and 18, 2003, the same weekend that the school will host the men’s lacrosse north quarterfinals on Saturday, May 17.
"We play a very difficult schedule, especially by adding a home match against Loyola," said sixth-year head coach Lisa Miller. “ I think we have the toughest schedule in the north. The reason we got into the tournament last year was through the strength of our schedule.”
SU opens its 15-game regular season schedule against Virginia in a home doubleheader with the men’s team. The Orangewomen defeated the southern power for the first time in the program’s history last year, 12-10, in Charlottesville, VA. Syracuse then takes to the road for three games against Virginia Tech, Maryland and Georgetown. The Terrapins went to the quarterfinals of the tournament, while the Hoyas were national runner-ups. Other March opponents include Boston College and Massachusetts in the Dome and Colgate and Connecticut on the road.
Notre Dame, a BIG EAST rival that defeated the Orangewomen for the first time in 2002, comes to the Dome on April 2. SU looks to avenge its only loss to an unranked opponent last year when Rutgers comes to town on April 5. After facing Dartmouth on the road, Syracuse plays a key match against local rival Cornell, who beat the Orangewomen twice last season, including a 16-8 defeat in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Syracuse rounds out the season with games against Boston University, Loyola and Northwestern.
The Orangewomen finished the 2002 season 10-6, including 3-3 in The BIG EAST Conference. SU qualified for its third straight NCAA Tournament.
