Syracuse Player Quotes
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Three Syracuse players recorded double-doubles and the Orangemen had their most productive half of basketball in five years, in a 92-65 victory against Georgia Tech Saturday at the Carrier Dome.
Freshman guard #Gerry McNamara# notched career highs in points (25) and assists (10) for his first career double-double. Freshman forward #Carmelo Anthony# scored 24 points and had 11 rebounds, and sophomore #Hakim Warrick# recorded 10 points and 11 boards. It was the first time since a March 22, 1996 NCAA West Regional game against Georgia that SU had three players with double-doubles (Otis Hill with 19 points and 11 rebounds, Lazarus Sims with 10 points and 10 assists, and John Wallace with 30 points and 15 boards).
After falling behind 11-4 in the first few minutes, the Orangemen used a 47-8 run to take command. The 58 points scored by the intermission was SU's best 20-minute output since the Orangemen posted 65 second-half markers against Rutgers on Feb. 22, 1997.
The SU defense held the Yellow Jackets to 36.0 percent shooting in the session, while the Orangemen hit 54.5 percent of their field goals and 58.8 percent of their shots from three-point range. Senior #Kueth Duany# shot 6-for-7 from the floor for 14 first-half points. McNamara sank four three-point attempts for 16 first-half points. Anthony was 4-for-6 from the arc and had 16 points at intermission. The Orangemen finished with 10 three-pointers in the half, exceeding their top game effort of the season
A 15-5 Syracuse run midway through the second half swelled the lead to 40, 83-43. The Orangemen outscored the Yellow Jackets 28-9 off of turnovers, and 44-30 in the paint in the game.
McNamara's 10 assists marked the first time a Syracuse player had double-digit helpers since Allen Griffin posted a triple-double against Pittsburgh on Feb. 27, 2001 (14 points, 10 rebounds, 11 assists). McNamara finished with a career-high five three-point baskets. The victory marked the fourth time in the last five games that Syracuse posted 90-or-more points.
Syracuse returns to the Dome for a contest against Albany on Saturday, Dec. 28, at 7 p.m.
