"We are very excited to have Tim Walton join our staff," Pasqualoni said. "We have known him for a long time. Tim made an official visit to Syracuse University when he was a highly recruited high school student-athlete. We played against him when he was a student-athlete at Ohio State during the 1991 and 1992 seasons. We have always had a high regard for him. At Bowling Green he did a fabulous job and then he moved to Memphis where he has also done very well. He is a very knowledgeable coach who is excellent with people and is an excellent recruiter. We are very happy to replace a real good guy in Brian Stewart with another real good guy like Tim Walton."
In Walton's first season at Memphis in 2000, the Tigers defense was ranked fifth nationally. He coached two first-team All-Conference USA selections in Idrees Bashir and Michael Stone, who were both 2001 NFL draft selections. In 2001 Walton's Tiger secondary finished the season ranked second in interceptions in Conference USA. Walton started his collegiate coaching career at Bowling Green State University in 1995 as a defensive graduate assistant. He was promoted to running backs coach in 1996 and was moved to coach the defensive backs in 1999.
In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Walton has had two internships in the National Football League, serving as a defensive intern for the Chicago Bears during the summer of 1998 and as a defensive intern for the Green Bay Packers during the summer of 2001.
A two-year starter at Ohio State, Walton served as a co-captain for the Big Ten co-Champion Buckeye team in 1993. Walton signed a free agent contract with the Atlanta Falcons following his senior season at Ohio State and was in the Falcons camp in 1994. He earned his degree from Ohio State in 1994.
