Filipovic and McDonough Start Off Strong at 2002 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships

In the preliminaries of the 2002 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday, February 21, at the Goodwill Aquatics Center on Long Island, Syracuse senior Djordje Filipovic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) finished first in the men's 200 individual medley. Sophomore Elyse McDonough (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) was third in the women's 200 IM. Both will compete in the championship race Thursday evening.
Filipovic, the two-time defending BIG EAST Conference champion in the men's 200 IM, reached an NCAA "B" qualifying time in the event Thursday morning. He won the prelims in a time of 1:48.60.
McDonough shattered her own school record in the 200 IM Thursday morning. She recorded an NCAA "B" qualifying time of 2:02.93. On January 26 at Connecticut, McDonough broke a 23-year-old university record in the 200 individual medley by posting a time of 2:05.94. Robin Butler, a three-time All-American at SU, held the previous school mark of 2:06.00 since 1979.
Also qualifying for Thursday night's championship races were sophomore Spencer Raymond (Idstein, Germany/Singapore American School) and freshman Josh Scott (Clayton, Calif./Clayton Valley). Raymond finished 12th in the men's 50 freestyle with a time of 20.96, while Scott was 15th in the men's 500 freestyle (4:34.61).
