PROVIDENCE, RI - Senior tri-captain Carrie Soults (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day School) was named Preseason BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, and sophomore Leigh-Ann Zimmer (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) was a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team in the BIG EAST preseason coaching poll released on Thursday, Feb. 21.
The Orangewomen were picked to finish second in The BIG EAST Conference behind Georgetown, which received all six possible first-place votes. Syracuse ended last season with a 10-5 overall record, including a 5-1 conference mark, and advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Soults, who also received Preseason All-BIG EAST honors, has garnered several other preseason accolades. Inside Lacrosse Magazine named the midfielder a preseason first-team All-American in its season preview, and Lacrosse Magazine listed Soults as a player to watch in 2002. Soults finished second on the team with 33 goals and 25 draws in 2001. She was named BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year and a third-team All-American by the IWLCA.
Zimmer led the Orangewomen with 36 goals last year. She was a second-team All-BIG EAST pick and an IWLCA First-Team Regional All-American.
Syracuse opens its season on Saturday, Feb. 23 at Stanford at 3 p.m., EST.
