Preseason Player of the Year Michael Powell (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) scored a career-high five goals and had a game-high eight points to lead second-ranked Syracuse to an 18-11 victory against No. 20-ranked Army at the Carrier Dome. It was the season opener for both teams and it marked the 700th all-time victory for the Orangemen program.
Syracuse boasts a 700-275-15 overall record in men's lacrosse since its first season in 1916. Only Johns Hopkins (794) has more wins in Division I.
Army's Marko Kostovic netted the game's first goal at the 13:17 mark of the first quarter. Syracuse responded with the next three goals and led 4-2 after the opening quarter.
The Orangemen closed out the first half strong. After Army's Jeff Bryan made the score 4-3 with the first of his team-high four goals at the 12:49 mark of the second quarter, the Orangemen rattled off six consecutive goals to break the contest open with a 10-3 halftime lead. During the spurt, Powell was responsible for two goals and an assist. Also getting into the action were senior attackman Josh Coffman (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage), junior attackman Michael Springer (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood), and senior midfielders Tom Hardy (Tully, N.Y./Tully) and Spencer Wright (San Diego, Calif./Junipero Serra). Coffman had a goal and an assist. He finished with three goals and four assists, tying his career highs for assists and points.
The Black Knights never quit. They came out by scoring the first two goals of the third quarter, both by Bryan. The five-goal deficit (10-5) with 13:47 left to play in the period would be as close as they would come the rest of the way. The SU midfielders gave their team a 14-5 cushion with goals by senior Brian Solliday (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage), Hardy and sophomore Sean Lindsay (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland-Panas). Coffman also scored in the third, while Powell dished out two assists.
Army outscored Syracuse, 6-4, in the fourth quarter. Chris Woods and Mike Kamon started off the period with a man-down tally and an extra-man score, respectively. Sophomore midfielder Steve Vallone (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) netted his second goal of the contest for SU at the 6:33 mark and it gave the Orangemen a 17-7 lead. Bryan and Woods had two more goals before it was over, while Army's high-scoring attackman Tim Pearson registered his two goals in the final 1:45 of the game.
Red-shirt freshman Jay Pfeifer (Towson, Md./Gilman) started in goal for Syracuse and played the game's first 46:01. He finished with seven saves in his collegiate debut before giving way to senior Alex Mummolo (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) who had one save and allowed three goals in nine minutes of action. Sophomore Nick Donatelli (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) played the final four minutes.
Army's Dominik Nogic made nine of his 10 saves in the first three quarters of the game. He was replaced by Scott Alpaugh in the fourth quarter.
