
Newman's 21 Leads Orangewomen in 74-46 Win Versus WVU

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Senior Leaf Newman (Perris, Calif./Perris H.S.) scored a season and game-high 21 points as the Orangewomen stopped a four-game losing streak, defeating the Mountaineers before a crowd of 856 at Manley Field House. SU improves to 15-11 this season and 8-7 in BIG EAST play. West Virginia is 14-12 and 6-8 in the conference.
Four Orangewomen scored in double figures, three set four different career highs and with the 74-46 victory against West Virginia, SU's 15 wins are the most for the program in the last 13 seasons.
Syracuse outscored the Mountaineers 42-14 in the second half, breaking open a game that was tied at 32 at halftime. Newman made a career-high five three-pointers and dished out a career-best six assists.
Sophomore Chineze Nwagbo (Lanham-Seabrook, Md./Duval Senior H.S.) posted a career-high 14 rebounds en route to her third career double-double, Nwagbo scored 11 points, all in the second half.
Seniors Jazmine Wright (South Orange, N.J./Columbia H.S.) and Jaime James (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North H.S.) chipped in with 14 and 13 points respectively. James added a career-high six steals.
With the victory Syracuse stops a four-game losing streak. The 15 wins are the most for an SU squad sine the 1989-90 season when the Orangewomen went 15-13. The last SU team to win at least 16 games was the 1987-88 squad that went 22-9.
Katie Bulger led WVU with 16 points. Sherell Sowho also scored in double figures with 12.
Syracuse's next game is Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. The Orangewomen host St. John's in the final game of the regular season.
