Junior attackman Michael Springer (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) had a game-high eight points (five goals, three assists) to help lead the Syracuse University men's lacrosse team to a 17-9 victory against Navy in a scrimmage at the Carrier Dome. There were 2,246 fans in attendance.
The two teams actually played five quarters and reset the score to zero after each stanza. The fifth quarter was 25 minutes running time. The score and statistics were compiled from the first four quarters, like an official game.
The Orangemen and Midshipmen played to a 4-4 first quarter. Springer, senior attackman Josh Coffman (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage), sophomore attackman Michael Powell (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) and senior midfielder Brian Solliday (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) each scored for SU, while Eddie McKinnon, Brad Hay and Eddy Holton each tallied for Navy.
SU took a 9-4 lead by scoring the first five goals of the second quarter. Springer and Coffman each had two goals during the spurt, while sophomore midfielder Sean Lindsay (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland Panas) also added a tally.
Sophomore attackman Brian Nee (Cockeysville, Md./Boys' Latin) punched in a pass from Coffman with 6:04 remaining in the third quarter to push SU's lead to 12-5. The Mids responded by scoring the first three goals of the fourth period, two by Greg Conklin and one by McKinnon. With the score at 12-8, that would be as close as Navy would come the rest of the way. Springer recorded two more goals and sophomore midfielder Steve Vallone (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) added two goals in the fourth period to give the Orangemen their biggest lead of the game (17-8). McKinnon netted the contests's final marker with 49 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
Both teams used three goalies in the scrimmage. Red-shirt freshman Jay Pfeifer (Towson, Md./Gilman) started for the Orangemen. He played the first 37:08 and had one save while allowing five goals. Senior Alex Mummolo (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) saw time next and finished with a team-high five saves. Sophomore Nick Donatelli (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) played the final 4:12 of the scrimmage and recorded two saves. Jon Higdon started in goal for the Midshipmen. He had seven saves and allowed 10 goals in the first half.
Syracuse will play another scrimmage next Saturday, February 16, at the University of Maryland, beginning at noon. The Orangemen's 2002 season and home opener is against Army on February 23, at 3:30 p.m.
