
Orangewomen Sweep Softball Doubleheader at Connecticut

STORRS, Conn. – The Syracuse pitching tandem of senior Heather Brown (Farmington, N.M./Farmington) and junior Tara DiMaggio (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) allowed only six hits and one unearned run to lead the Orangewomen softball team to a 7-0, 4-1 doubleheader sweep at Connecticut on Saturday, March 30. Syracuse is now 12-10 overall and 2-0 in the BIG EAST, while the Huskies are now 3-18 and 0-4 in conference play.
Brown was in control from the start of the opener, scattering four hits and striking out nine in her second complete-game shutout of the season. Brown is now 3-5 for the season. Barb Cook was the losing pitcher for Connecticut, dropping her record to 3-9.
DiMaggio also threw well in the nightcap, allowing only two hits and one unearned run. She struck out seven hitters in her sixth complete-game of the season. DiMaggio is now 5-5 on the season. Claire Hesson was the loser for UConn. She is now 0-8 in 2002.
The Orangewomen struck first with two runs in the top of the first inning of the opener. Freshman catcher Katie Kaempfer (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza) doubled to the gap in left center and scored when redshirt sophomore Cheryl Julicher (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville North) hit her team-leading seventh home run of the season.
Syracuse broke open the game with four runs on five hits in the top of third inning. Redshirt sophomore Rachel Park (Mt. Juliet, Tenn./Friendship Christian) drove in a run with a single and freshman Tanya Rose (Milwaukie, Ore./Rex Putman) plated two with a double to the right-centerfield gap. Junior designated player Julie Dunn (Springfield, Ill./Springfield) followed with a single to score Rose.
SU scored its final run in the sixth inning when junior Kristen Collins (Stow, Mass./Nashoba Regional) recorded a sacrifice fly that scored senior Becky Snyder (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial). Snyder started the rally with an infield single in her first at-bat of the season.
The Syracuse offense stayed hot in the second game. The Orangewomen again scored a first inning run on a long ball by Kaempfer. It was the rookie's first career home run and extended SU's school-record season total to 11. Kaempfer struck again in the third inning with a two-run double to extend Syracuse's lead to 3-0.
The Huskies scored their first run of the day in the bottom of the sixth inning. Maggie Arbogast singled to centerfield to score Ashleigh Campen, who had reached on an error. SU got the run back in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by junior Christina Holowich (Castro Valley, Calif./Moreau Catholic).
Kaempfer led the Syracuse offense with three hits, three runs scored and three RBI in the two games. Julicher contributed four hits, two runs batted in and two runs scored in the doubleheader, while Collins had a four-hit day with two runs scored and an RBI. Rose had three hits and two runs batted in. Holowich collected three hits, a run batted in and scored two runs. Seven of SU's nine starters had hits in the doubleheader.
The Orangewomen will open the home portion of their schedule on Monday, April 1 with a BIG EAST doubleheader versus St. John's. The first game will get underway at 12 p.m.
