Collins Sets School Record in 3-0 Win

PLEASANTON, Calif. - Junior outfielder Kristen Collins (Stow, Mass./Nashoba Regional) had a school-record four hits to lead the Orangewomen softball team to a 3-0 win versus Miami (OH) on Saturday, Mar. 8 at the National Invitational Softball Tournament. Syracuse snapped a four-game losing streak and improved its record to 3-6, while the Redhawks are now 3-11.
Collins was perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4. The previous school record for hits in game was three accomplished by several SU players.
Junior pitcher Tara DiMaggio (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) threw Syracuse's first shutout of the season. DiMaggio is now 1-3 on the year after striking out six in seven innings. She gave up six hits and did not walk a batter.
The Orangewomen scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Collins started the rally with a one-out single and scored on a double by sophomore first baseman Cheryl Julicher (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville North). SU added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth. Sophomore Cortney Nickerson (Farmington, N.M./Farmington) plated a run on a fielder's choice.
Freshman outfielder Tanya Rose (Milwaukie, Ore./Rex Putnam) had the best game of her young career with her first three-hit game. Rose went 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Collins is now hitting a team-best .577 (15-for-26) for the season, including a .636 (7-for-11) peformance in the N.I.S.T. Julicher's RBI was her team-leading sixth of the season.
Syracuse advances in the consolation bracket to take on San Jose State.
