
Orangewomen Extend Winning Streak with Sweep of Binghamton

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - A four-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning of game two propelled the Syracuse softball team to a 5-2 victory and a doubleheader sweep of Binghamton on Wednesday, April 10 at the Syracuse Softball Stadium. The Orangewomen won the first game 5-0.
Syracuse has now won a school-record six consecutive games and is 16-10 overall. The losses dropped the Bearcats to 15-14.
The Orangewomen trailed 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning of the nightcap. Junior Kristen Collins (Stow, Mass./Nashoba Regional) started the inning with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Following a pop-up to shortstop, freshman catcher Katie Kaempfer (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza) hit a groundball to second base. Marybeth Yerdon fielded the ball and tried to retire Collins at third, but her throw got away and Collins scampered home with the tying run. Four hits later, the Orangewomen had built a 5-2 advantage. Redshirt sophomore Cheryl Julicher (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville North), junior Julie Dunn (Springfield, Ill./Springfield)and sophomore Nikki Lincoln (Baton Rouge, La./Episcopal) all drove in runs with singles.
Syracuse had only two hits in the game until the sixth inning. The Orangewomen did not have a baserunner until Julicher singled in the fifth inning.
The comeback was the second of the game for Syracuse. After falling behind, 1-0, on a home run by Binghamton's Jessica Chellis in the fifth inning, the Orangewomen scored a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Lincoln delivered a two-out single to drive in the run. The Bearcats re-took the lead in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Margaret Yerdon.
Senior Heather Brown (Farmington, N.M./Farmington) was the winner for Syracuse. She is 5-5 on the season after allowing only four hits and striking out nine in the complete-game. Mary Karen Wheat took the loss to lower her record to 7-7. Wheat allowed five runs on six hits and struck out two.
The Orangewomen took control of the first game from the start en route to a 5-0 shutout. Freshman pitcher Taylor Petersen (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) ran her record to 5-0 with a two-hit shutout. Petersen faced just three over the minimum, giving up a pair of hits in the fourth inning and an SU error in the seventh. Petersen struck out eight without allowing a walk in seven innings of work. She is the first Syracuse pitcher ever to win five consecutive decisions.
Syracuse plated two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Four consecutive hits, including RBI singles by Julicher and freshman Tanya Rose (Milwaukie, Ore./Rex Putnam) put the Orangewomen ahead for good.
SU tacked on insurance runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Petersen and Rose each drove in a run. Syracuse also scored an unearned run on a Binghamton miscue. Margaret Yerdon was the losing pitcher, allowing five runs on 11 hits. She struck out five and walked two. Yerdon isnow 4-6 on the season.
Rose and Julicher each had three-hit, two RBI days for the Orangewomen, Rose also stole two bases without getting caught and scored twice. Lincoln drove in a pair of runs with two hits. Collins, Dunn, Kaempfer and redshirt sophomore Rachel Park (Mt. Juliet, Tenn./Friendship Christian) all had two hits in the twin bill.
The Orangewomen will put their winning streak on the line at Pittsburgh on Saturday, April 13. The doubleheader starts at 11 a.m. SU will also travel to Notre Dame on Sunday, April 14. That twin bill begins at 12 p.m.
