CAPE COD, MASS.---Syracuse University women's varsity eight was named ECAC Crew of the Week.
The Syracuse women raced Boston University and Clemson University on their home waters of Onondaga Lake on Saturday March 30.
A quartering head/cross wind created choppy conditions in the first 1000 meters and the water flattened out in the second half of the course. The Orangewomen took the lead at the start and steadily opened it up throughout the race, to finish 8.7 seconds ahead of BU and 13.2 seconds ahead of Clemson.
When Syracuse met BU in duel competition during the 2001 season, Syracuse won by a much narrower margin, a mere 1.8 seconds. With a varsity boat comprised of five seniors, two juniors and one freshman, Syracuse kept a low cadence, around 32-33 strokes per minute. "I am pleased that they executed the race plan. They had long, powerful strokes and didn't get flustered," Coach Chris Sanford said.
