Men's Lacrosse Loses to No. 9 Cornell, 15-11
4/9/2002 8:48:08 PM | Men's Lacrosse
Freshman attackman Sean Greenhalgh scored a career-high six goals to lead ninth-ranked Cornell to a 15-11 men's lacrosse victory against top-ranked Syracuse at Schoellkopf Field. It marked Cornell's second win against SU in the past three seasons. In 2000, the only loss for the 15-1 national-champion Orangemen was a 13-12 setback at Schoellkopf.
After a fierce rainstorm swept through the stadium prior to the opening faceoff, Greenhalgh, who ranks seventh in the nation in goals per game (3.14), tallied the contest's first goal just three minutes in. He had two more goals in the first quarter which helped the Big Red jump out to a 6-2 lead. For Syracuse, that equaled its largest deficit of the season.
The second quarter belonged to SU sophomore attackman Michael Powell (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage),who had a hand in all four of the Orangemen's goals. SU outscored Cornell, 4-0, in the second period to tie the game at 6-6 by halftime. Powell, who also tallied a goal in the first quarter, registered two goals and two assists during the second 15 minutes, including a nifty behind-the-back shot off a feed from senior attackman Josh Coffman (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage).
Syracuse sophomore midfielder Steve Vallone (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) chipped in with two goals in the first half.
The Big Red and Orangemen traded goals during the first six minutes of the third quarter. Freshman Justin Redd put Cornell ahead, 7-6, at the 13:20 mark, but SU freshman Jarett Park (Tully, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) collected a groundball off a faceoff and ran to the cage to score just 12 seconds later. Redd found Greenhalgh at the 11:29 mark to once again put the Big Red in front, 8-7, but senior midfielder Tom Hardy (Tully, N.Y./Tully) made a nice cut and had the ball delivered to his stick by Powell for the final equalizer (8-8) of the evening with 9:20 remaining in the third quarter.
Cornell (8-1) pushed its lead to two (10-8) with goals by Galen Beers and Mike Riordan in the third quarter.
The Orangemen received a man-up goal from junior attackman Michael Springer (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) with 4:35 left to play in the third. That goal, which put SU within one (10-9), would prove to be as close as the Orangemen would come the rest of the way. Andrew Collins and Sean Greenhalgh netted goals before the period ended and Cornell led, 12-9, with one quarter remaining.
Powell connected with sophomore attackman Brian Nee (Cockeysville, Md./Boys' Latin) on a man-up opportunity at the 11:41 mark of the fourth quarter to edge into the Cornell lead, 12-10. The Orangemen were unable to build momentum as sophomore defenseman Tim DeBlois hit Collins who was wide open in front of the SU net. Cornell led 13-10 with 10:23 to play.
Springer recorded SU's final goal of the game with 10:01 remaining. Redd and Greenhalgh kept attacking the goal. Redd gave the Big Red a 14-11 advantage at the 5:16 mark and Greenhalgh capped off his career-high day with his sixth goal of the game at the 4:24 mark.
Cornell's preseason first-team All-America goalie Justin Cynar finished with 11 saves. SU's red-shirt freshman goalie Jay Pfeifer (Towson, Md./Gilman) played the entire game and totaled five saves.
The Orangemen are now 8-2 and will travel to Rutgers for their next game on Saturday, April 13, at 1 p.m. at Yurcak Field.
