
Brown Tosses Three-Hit Shutout in Doubleheader Split

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Senior pitcher Heather Brown (Farmington, N.M./Farmington) tossed a three-hit shutout to lead the Syracuse softball team to a 7-0 win in the first game of a doubleheader versus Seton Hall on Wednesday, May 1. The Orangewomen lost the second game, 5-4.
SU is now 23-19 overall and 10-6 in the BIG EAST. Seton Hall stands at 29-15 overall and 11-7 in league play.
Brown improved to 9-9 on the season and 6-2 in BIG EAST play with her team-best fifth shutout of the season. She has not allowed a run in her last two starts. Brown struck out nine and walked three in the game. Casey McDevitt was the losing pitcher. She is now 7-4 on the season.
Brown got plenty of offensive support in the opener. Syracuse plated two runs in the first inning to take the lead for good. Freshman Tanya Rose (Milwaukie, Ore./Rex Putnam) drove in both runs with a two-out single to right field. Syracuse took a 3-0 lead in the third with an unearned run on two Pirate errors.
The Orangewomen scored three more in the fourth. Back-to-back doubles by sophomore Nikki Lincoln (Baton Rouge, La./Episcopal) and junior Jenn Read (Vancouver, B.C./Terry Fox) plated the first run and junior Christina Holowich (Castro Valley, Calif./Moreau Catholic) drove in the second run with a single. Seton Hall's third error of the game allowed the Orangewomen to take a 6-0 lead. They would stretch the margin to 7-0 in the sixth on an RBI single by sophomore Rachel Park (Mt. Juliet, Tenn./Friendship Christian).
Holowich led the offense with three hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Rose went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs driven in.
The Pirates were the one that jumped out to the first-inning lead in the nightcap, scoring twice in their first at-bat. A wild pitch allowed the first run to score, while Meg Berry drove in the second with a sacrifice fly. Seton Hall extended its lead to 4-0 in the third when Laura Taylor belted her 18th home run of the season, a two-run shot. Taylor leads the nation in home runs per game.
Syracuse closed the game to 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore Cheryl Julicher (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville North) led off with a triple and scored on a throwing error by Seton Hall pitcher Christina Shanko. Junior Julie Dunn (Springfield, Ill./Springfield) drove in a run with a single and Read plated the third run on a squeeze bunt.
Seton Hall took a 5-3 lead in fifth on a sacrifice fly by Amy Mellin. The Orangewomen would score one more time in the sixth on an RBI single by Holowich.
Junior Tara DiMaggio (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) was the losing pitcher for Syracuse, lowering her record to 9-8. She pitched two and one-third inings, allowing four runs on five hits. She struck out two. Shanko was the winner, improving to 11-5. Megan Meyer came on in the sixth to pick up her sixth save of the season.
Julicher paced SU at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a run scored. Holowich went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The Orangewomen are tentatively scheduled to play Pittsburgh at home on Monday, May 6.
