
SU Sends 24 to BIG EAST Track & Field Championship

Leading the Orangewomen is freshman Nicole Kendrick (Lancaster, Ohio/ Lancaster HS), who ranks first in the conference in the discus, fifth in the shot put and eighth in the hammer throw. Fellow frosh thrower Johvonne Hernandez (Port Isabel, Texas/Port Isabel HS) is ranked third in shot put, discus and hammer throw. Junior Aprelle Watkins (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem HS) has qualified in the triple jump, where she ranks second, and the long jump. Freshman Jenna Grimaldi (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius HS) ranks second in the BIG EAST in the high jump and classmate Tatiana Warren (Brooklyn, N.Y./Clara Barton HS) will make her first appearance at a BIG EAST championship in the triple jump.
Senior Stacey Dwyer (Huntington Station, N.Y./Barton County CC) and sophomore LaNae Walker (Dallas, Texas/DeSoto) will represent SU in the 400-meter hurdles. Junior Zelma Jackson (Aurora, Colo./Randolph HS/Barton County CC) qualified in the steeplechase and graduate student Alicia Crowd (Greenwich, N.Y./Greenwich HS) will compete in the 400-meter dash. Freshman Valerie Boling (Denver, Colo./George Washington HS) posted qualifying times in the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Boling will also run in the 400-meter relay with Dwyer, Warren and Watkins.
The contingent of Orangemen is led by junior Tim Adrian (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS), who is the defending BIG EAST discus champion. Adrian currently ranks second in the conference in the shot put and discus and has also qualified in the hammer throw. Also qualifying in the shot put, discus and hammer is junior Steve Bedard (Windsor, Ont./St. Joseph?s HS), while fellow junior Tim Biever (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon HS) will compete in the shot and discus. Junior Sam Prescod (Bridgetown, Barbados/Harrison HS) will represent SU in the javelin and has also qualified in the high jump. Classmate Joel Carusone (Slingerlands, N.Y./Guilderland HS) is making his third appearance in as many years in the pole vault. Senior Matt Troha (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford HS) will compete in the high jump.
Junior Richard Polidore (Chino, Calif./Chino HS), the team?s most diverse performer, has qualified in the 100 and 200 meters, the long and triple jump and the 400-meter relay. Polidore enters the meet with the fastest 100-meter time in the conference with a 10.59 (10.45 wind-aided). Joining Polidore on the 100-meter qualifying list is junior Latroy Oliver (Hartford, Conn./Weaver HS). Sophomore John Bitok (Kitale, Kenya/Paul Boit HS) has posted qualifying times in the 1500 and 5000-meter runs.
In addition to the 400-meter relay team of Oliver, Polidore, junior Sean Burnett (Uniondale, N.Y./Uniondale HS) and freshman Chris Telesford (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Ford), SU will also compete in the 3200-meter relay. The team consists of sophomore Mike Czabaj (Avenel, N.J./Kennedy HS), freshman Brian McNeil (Franklin, Mass./St. John's HS), sophomore Sean Miller (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area HS) and Telesford.
Syracuse will begin competition on Saturday, May 4 with the trials of the women's and men's 100-meter dash at 1:30 and 1:45, respectively.
