Cornell Defeats Orangewomen, 16-8, In First Round of NCAA Tournament

ITHACA, NY – The 13-seed Syracuse women’s lacrosse team held an early lead against fourth-seed Cornell but it was not able to hold off the Big Red in the Orangewomen's 16-8 loss in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Schoellkopf Field.
The Orangewomen finished their season at 10-6, while Cornell extended its record to 15-1 and will host Maryland in the second round of the tournament on May 12.
Senior captain Carrie Soults (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day School) started the scoring 2:21 into the game off an assist by sophomore Danielle Lillis (West Islip, NY/West Islip). After Cornell tied the game a minute later, Soults found the back of the net again to regain the advantage, 2-1. Junior Kim Wayne (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale) scored her only goal at 11:49 to give SU its largest lead of the game, 3-1.
Jaimee Reynolds scored three of the next six Cornell goals to help the Big Red to a 7-3 halftime lead. Reynolds finished the game with four goals and two assists.
Cornell scored eight unanswered goals before junior Jessica Trombley (Kueka Park, NY/Penn Yan) tallied SU’s fourth goal of the game at 39:07 to make it 9-4.
Goals by Soults and freshman Courtney Palladino (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) kept SU within six, 11-5 and 12-6, but Cornell scored the next four goals to extend the lead to 10, 16-6.
Soults led the scoring with four goals. She finished her career at Syracuse with 133 points on 108 goals and 25 assists. Goalie Carla Gigon (Hingham, MA/Hingham) made 10 saves in the cage for the Orangwomen.
