"We are pleased to have Penn State on our schedule once again," said SU Director of Athletics Jake Crouthamel. "Scheduling non-conference football opponents has become more difficult due to the varying league obligations of their members. Despite the fact that it took longer than we anticipated, the rivalry will continue."
Syracuse has squared off with Penn State 68 times previously, but not since 1990. The Nittany Lions have a 40-23-5 advantage in the all-time series. SU split the last four games of the series against Penn State, including a 48-21 victory in the Carrier Dome in 1987 and a 24-10 victory in Beaver Stadium in 1988.
"The Syracuse-Penn State rivalry is one our fans have fond memories of," said head coach Paul Pasqualoni. "We look forward to the challenge of preparing to play another top-notch program."
Syracuse kicks off the 2002 season on August 29 in Provo, Utah against Brigham Young. The Orangemen will open the home portion of their schedule on September 7 when they host North Carolina in the Carrier Dome. For tickets call 888-DOMETIX.
