SYRACUSE, NY -- William Edelin of Silver Spring, Md., has successfully petitioned for readmission to Syracuse University.
Edelin has met the conditions placed upon him at the time he was suspended by a University Appeals Board for violations of the UniversityÕs Code of Student Conduct. He may now contact the dean of his school to begin the enrollment process for the Fall 2002 semester. His suspension will terminate officially on Aug. 15, 2002, at which time he may return to campus.
The Appeals Board determined that Edelin be suspended for a minimum of one year, beginning with the Fall 2001 semester.
According to the terms of the suspension, Edelin would not be allowed to petition before August 1, 2002. However, in instances in which a petition date would cause an undue hardship to a student, the University allows the student to submit papers at an earlier date. Edelin requested to the Office of Judicial Affairs that he be allowed to petition June 1, 2002, and his request was granted.
EdelinÕs petition was reviewed by the director of judicial affairs and the dean of students, as specified in the Syracuse University Judicial System Handbook.
The Judicial System Handbook states:
"A student É placed on a status of indefinite suspension is permitted, after a prescribed period of separation, to submit a petition demonstrating his/her good citizenship in the time away from the University and potential for making positive contributions in the future.
"Individual student petitions are required to include: a personal essay evidencing the learning the student has gained from the incident that led the indefinite suspension; the manner in which the student has been occupied since his/her departure from the University; and, the specific commitments the student will make to contributing positively to the University community if offered the opportunity for readmission; documented evidence of the studentÕs completion of substantial service to the community; documented evidence of gainful employment and/or completion of academic course work at an accredited institution of higher education; and, documented evidence of completion of any special assignments identified for the student by the Office of Judicial Affairs at the time of or subsequent to the studentÕs departure. This petition is reviewed by the director of judicial affairs and the dean of students who will determine whether and under what conditions a student may be permitted to return to the University in a future semester."
In considering his petition, the director of judicial affairs and the dean of students required that Edelin agree to follow certain provisions while attending the University.
Edelin has agreed to temporarily waive his rights under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) for the purpose of allowing the University to disclose the above-stated information about his successful petition.
