SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The 2002-03 Syracuse women's basketball recruiting class has been ranked 15th in the nation by the All-Star Girls Report. The Orangewomen will have six newcomers on the roster next season.
The Orangewomen's class consists of freshmen Marchele Campbell (Kansas City, Mo./Schlage), Tierra Jackson (Upper Marlboro, Md./Frederick Douglas) and Jill Norton (Marlton, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep). Also joining Syracuse will be junior college transfers Awa Diop (Colombes, France/Western Nebraska C.C.), Krystalyn Ellerbe (Clinton, Md./Talahasse (FL) C.C.) and April Jean (Sacramento, Calif./Coffeyville (KS) C.C.).
SU was one of six BIG EAST schools ranked in the top 20, the most of any conference in the nation. The Southeastern Conference had five teams ranked, while the ACC featured four teams. The Big XII was next with three teams among the top 20.
The Orangewomen also return six letterwinners from last year's squad that went 18-13 and received an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament, including top-scorer Julie McBride (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville). McBride, a third-team All-BIG EAST selection last season as a sophomore, averaged 14.9 points and 5.6 assists to become the first Syracuse women's player ever to record 400 points and 150 assists in the same season.
