Twenty-three Orangemen have played in the Super Bowl and 15 have won titles. Defensive back Tebucky Jones of the 2001 Super Bowl winning New England Patriots is the latest SU alum to earn an NFL championship ring. Jones, who converted from running back to defensive back his senior season at Syracuse, recorded five tackles and an assist in the Patriots’ 20-17 victory over St. Louis.
Running back Larry Csonka won MVP honors in Super Bowl VIII, leading his Miami Dolphins to their second-consecutive NFL title. Csonka carried the ball 33 times for 145 yards, a Super Bowl record at the time.
An SU alum has suited up for the big game every year since 1991. Csonka, Daryl Johnston and Art Monk are the Orangemen with the most Super Bowl appearances, making the trip three times apiece. Johnston’s Dallas Cowboys were successful all three times, giving him the most Super Bowl rings.
Syracuse kicks off the 2002 season on August 29 in Provo, Utah against Brigham Young. The Orangemen will open the home portion of their schedule on September 7 when they host North Carolina in the Carrier Dome. For tickets call 888-DOMETIX or visit www.dometix.com.
