SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse University women-s soccer team played the University at Buffalo to a 2-2, double-overtime draw at the Syracuse Soccer Stadium in the second game of the Orange Classic on Friday, Aug. 30. Texas Tech defeated Colgate, 2-1, in the first game. It was the season-opening game for all four teams.
Buffalo got on the board first when Erin McGarry took a pass from Elizabeth Pfeffer and beat SU sophomore goal keeper Shannon Myers (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield HS) on the near post in the 31st minute.
Syracuse junior Nina Scalzo (Webster, N.Y./Webster) tied the game at 1-1 seven minutes later, driving home a headed pass from sophomore Natalie Galas (Sterling Heights, Mich./Bishop Foley HS).
The Bulls took a 2-1 lead in the 48th minute on a Robin Aparo goal.
Despite increased offensive pressure from the Orangewomen, the UB defense held strong for most of the second half.
SU sophomore Stephanie Sybert (Baltimore, Md./Maryvale Prep) tied the game in the 81st minute, ball just over the reach of Buffalo keeper Anna-Lesa Calvert. Freshman Brooke DeRosa (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot HS) picked up her first collegiate assist on the play.
Neither team could convert its chances in either of the 10-minute overtime periods.
Myers finished the game with five saves, while Calvert had four.
McGarry's goal was the first by an SU opponent in 205:26 of regular season play, dating back to Oct. 26 of the 2001 season. It was the first season-opening tie for SU since playing Rutgers to a 1-1 draw to open the 1998 season.
Syracuse (0-0-1) will play Texas Tech (1-0-0) at noon on Sunday, Colgate (0-1-0) will play (Buffalo (0-0-1) at 2:30 in the Soccer Stadium.
