
Orangemen Soccer Loses to Coastal Carolina, 3-1

RICHMOND, Va. - The Syracuse men's soccer team is now 0-2 after a 3-1 loss to Coastal Carolina on Sunday, September 1 at the Nike/ALLTEL Classic hosted by Virginia Commonwealth.
Coastal Carolina (1-0-1), the defending Big South champion and the first of seven 2001 NCAA participants on the Orangemen's schedule, scored first in the 26th minute of the game on a goal by Joseph Ngwenya's. The Chanticleers went ahead 2-0 on a Syracuse own goal just more than four minutes after halftime.
The Orangemen cut the lead to 2-1 at the 57:46 mark when senior Guido Cristofori (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) netted SU's first goal of the season. Sophomore Ryan Hickey (Spencerport, N.Y./Spencerport) had the assist, his first career points. Cristofori provided most of the Orangemen's scoring opportunities, taking six of SU's 12 shots.
Coastal Carolina set the final score at 3-1 with a goal by John DeVae in the 60th minute. Randall Owen and Ngwenya assisted on the play.
Freshman goalkeeper Alim Karim (Scarborough, Ontario/West Hill Collegiate) made his second start in net for the Orangemen. He recorded five saves in the complete-game effort. Aaron Sanders was the winning keeper for the Chanticleers, making two saves in his 90 minutes of play.
Syracuse will make its home debut on Saturday, September 7 at 1 p.m. when it hosts Georgetown. It will be the BIG EAST opener for both schools.
