No. 8 Michigan State Shuts Out Field Hockey, 5-0

Sophomore Annebet Beerman (Maarssen, Netherlands/St. Bonifatius College) tallied two goals as No. 8-ranked Michigan State defeated Syracuse, 5-0, in the third game of the BIG EAST/Big Ten Field Hockey Challenge at Coyne Field. The win improved the Spartan's season record to 5-1. Syracuse is now 2-2.
Beerman notched the game's first goal just 2:18 into the contest off a direct-corner strike. She was assisted by Julia Adams and Jenny Sanders. MSU went up 2-0 at the 23:58 mark of the first half when Michelle Carstens tipped in a Judith van Haeringen shot.
Michigan State led, 2-0, at halftime.
Syracuse attempted two shots on goal during the game and both were taken in the first half. The Orangewomen had one penalty-corner opportunity and that also came during the game's first 35 minutes.
MSU scored three goals in the second half. Beerman found the back of the cage just more than three minutes into the second stanza. Van Haeringen found Sanders for a shot inside the circle at 52:55, and at 64:46 Michelle Huynh-Ba was positioned perfectly at the left post for a rebound goal.
Michigan State outshot SU, 25-2. Syracuse goalkeeper Audrey Latsko (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) finished with 13 saves. Christina Krikaldy and Lauren Hess each saw time in goal for the Spartans. Krikaldy stopped both of Syracuse's shots in the first half.
In the first game of the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge, Rutgers (2-3) defeated Indiana (1-4) in overtime, 2-1. Leann Grondski scored the game-winner on a penalty stroke for the Scarlet Knights. In the second match, No. 16-ranked Ohio State (3-2) beat Villanova, 6-2. Leticia Fragapane scored two goals and had one assist, while Vanessa Immordino netted two goals for the Buckeyes.
Action continues on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 10 a.m. at Coyne Field when Villanova (3-2) takes on Indiana. The second contest will feature Michigan State against Rutgers. Syracuse will go up against Ohio State at approximately 2 p.m.
