Sophomore forward Lindsay Peirson (North Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial) scored just 2:18 into overtime to give No. 24-ranked Syracuse a 1-0 victory against No. 16-ranked Ohio State in the final game of the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge at Coyne Field. It was Peirson's second goal of the season and her first career game-winning tally.
Syracuse seemed to be in control for much of the game. The Orangewomen took five shots in the first half and forced five penalty corners, while holding the Buckeyes to just four shots and two corners in the opening period. Sophomore forward Meredith Gettel (Rehresburg, Pa./Tulpehocken) had SU's best chance for a goal in the first half. She tried to bat in a rebound, but OSU's Lara Koole jumped up to make a pretty glove save.
In the second half, the SU defense held Ohio State to just two shots and one corner.
The game-winning goal came at the 72:18 mark when senior forward Michelle Marks (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) dribbled her way through the circle and passed off to a wide-open Peirson at the left post.
Senior goalkeeper Audrey Latsko (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) played the entire game and recorded three saves. It was her third shutout of the season. She surpassed Eileen Lewis (1981-84) on the school's all-time shutout list. She has 15.5 shutouts for her career.
Koole finished with six saves for Ohio State. Stacey Todd attempted three shots in the contest, while Vanessa Immordino took two shots. The Buckeyes are now 3-3 on the year.
The Orangewomen improve to 3-2 on the season. They will next be in action on Wednesday, Sept. 18, when they host another Big Ten opponent, Penn State. Game time against the No. 12-ranked Nittany Lions is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Also on Sunday at Coyne Field, Indiana defeated Villanova, 3-1, while Michigan State cruised past Rutgers, 12-1.
