Sophomore midfielder Amanda Eckert (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) scored just less than eight minutes into the contest and junior midfielder Heather Conroy (Duncannon, Pa./Susquenita) tallied her seventh goal of the season as No. 7-ranked Penn State defeated No. 20-ranked Syracuse, 2-0, in a collegiate field hockey game played at Coyne Field.
The Nittany Lions led, 1-0, at halftime thanks to Eckert's goal at the 7:44 mark.
Conroy, PSU's leading scorer with 14 points in five games, registered an unassisted goal at 39:01 of the second half.
Penn State (5-0) outshot Syracuse, 11-9, for the game. Syracuse senior goalkeeper Audrey Latsko (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) finished with six saves, while junior Annie Zinkavich stopped four shots for the Nittany Lions.
Syracuse turned up the intensity in the second half, outshooting Penn State, 5-4. The Orangewomen forced five penalty corners, while the Nittany Lions had one corner opportunity in the second stanza.
The Orangewomen's season record is 3-3. They begin BIG EAST Conference play this Saturday, Sept. 21, when they travel to Rutgers for a 1 p.m. pushback.
