Sophomores Lindsay Peirson (North Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial) and Brittany Carriero (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) each scored goals as the No. 20-ranked Syracuse field hockey team defeated Rutgers in The BIG EAST Conference opener for both teams. The Orangewomen improved to 4-3 overall, 1-0 in the league. The Scarlet Knights' season record fell to 2-5, 0-1 in the conference.
Peirson notched her team-leading third goal of the season at the 16:39 mark when she tipped in a Kristin Aronowicz (Exton, Pa./Downingtown) penalty corner shot. Syracuse carried its 1-0 lead into the halftime intermission. Rutgers goalkeeper Stacey Gaenzle saved seven of SU's nine shots in the first half. RU's Leann Grondski also had a defensive save during the first 35 minutes.
Gaenzle and the Scarlet Knight defense held the Orangewomen without a goal for most of the second half. With three minutes remaining, Carriero scored off a ball from senior forward Michelle Marks (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) for the final goal of the game, giving Syracuse a 2-0 victory. It was Carriero's first goal of the season and fourth of her career.
SU senior goalkeeper Audrey Latsko (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) finished the contest with five saves.
The Orangewomen are next in action on Wednesday, Sept. 25, when they host No. 21-ranked Hofstra at 3 p.m.
