SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse women's soccer team broke a four-game losing streak, tying Miami, 2-2, at the Syracuse Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
SU sophomore Natalie Galas' (Sterling Heights, Mich./Bishop Foley HS) goal at 63:47 tied the game at 2-2, sending the contest into overtime. Galas took a pass from junior Erica Mastrogiacomo (Weymouth, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) and pulled away from a defender in the middle of the field before shooting over Hurricane goalkeeper Rachel Elsby for the score.
Neither team was able to score in overtime despite numerous opportunities. SU outshot Miame 3-1 in the first overtime, while the Hurricanes turned the tables in the second extra period with a 6-1 shot advantage.
The Orangewomen got on the board first at 11:17 when Galas found junior Anne-Marie Lapalme (Granby, Quebec/John Abbott Prep) with a short pass on a corner kick. Lapalme, unmarked by a defender, beat Elsby to the far post with a shot from just inside the 18 for the 1-0 lead.
Miami answered less than three minutes later with Britney Butcher's 10th goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1. Allison McWhinney put the 'Canes up 2-1 at 28:30 when she gathered and put home a shot by Vonda Matthews that had ricocheted off the crossbar. Elsby made 10 saves, including point-blank stops on shots by Lapalme and sophomore Stephanie Sybert (Baltimore, Md./Maryvale Prep) late in the second half. Freshman Emily Kowalczyk (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville HS) made five saves for Syracuse.
SU (2-5-2 overall, 0-2-1 BIG EAST) avoided a five-game losing streak and a three-game home losing streak, both program records, with the tie. Miami is now 7-3-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the BIG EAST.
The Orangewomen play at Providence on Friday, Oct. 4 at 4 p.m., and at Boston College on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 2:30 p.m.
