Syracuse scored all three of its goals as a result of penalty corners in a season-opening 3-0 victory against Stanford at Coyne Field. The Cardinal entered the contest undefeated and unscored upon.
For the Orangewomen, it marked their 11th consecutive win at home, dating back to Oct. 22, 2000.
"I was delighted with the way we played our first game," said head coach Kathleen Parker, now in her 25th season at Syracuse. "I expected there to be nerves and I tried to let them settle down during the first 10 minutes or so. They set a high level for themselves. They looked pretty sharp. We're going to keep demanding more from them."
Senior back Missy Grosman (Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus) put the Orangewomen on the board first at 28:59 of the first half. She received a pass from sophomore forward Ann-Marie Guglieri (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) and fired a hard shot to the left of Stanford goalkeeper Emily Zander.
In the second half, junior midfielder Jackie Sheaffer (Richfield, Pa./Middleburg) was at the left post to slap in the second rebound on a penalty corner. The initial shot was saved by Cardinal goalie Anastasia Kralovec, but bounced out to the stick of sophomore midfielder Brittany Carriero (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville). Carriero's shot was stopped by Kralovec, but Sheaffer pounced on the second rebound at the 48:17 mark.
Syracuse (1-0) netted its third goal off a clean direct-corner play. Sheaffer pushed the ball out to Guglieri who stopped the ball for senior midfielder Kristin Aronowicz (Exton, Pa./Downingtown). Aronowicz's hard drive found the back of the cage at 63:40. It was her 34th career goal.
Stanford outshot Syracuse, 10-9. The Orangewomen finished with 10 penalty corners, while the Cardinal had six chances. Senior goalkeeper Audrey Latsko (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) stopped four Stanford shots to earn her 13th career shutout. Zander and Kralovec split time and each recorded one save. Zander started the game and played the first 35 minutes, while Kralovec played the entire second half.
The Cardinal are now 3-1 on the season. They will play New Hampshire at 1 p.m. EST on Sunday, Sept. 8, at Syracuse's Coyne Field.
The Orangewomen host New Hampshire at 2 p.m. EST on Saturday, Sept. 7.
