Junior forward Jen Stamp scored in double overtime to give the New Hampshire field hockey team a 2-1 victory against Syracuse at Coyne Field. It was the Wildcats' first win of the season. For Syracuse, it marked the team's first loss at home since Oct. 22, 2000.
UNH senior midfielder Marcie Boyer registered the game's first goal 24:53 into the first half. She took a pass in transition up the middle of the circle and fired her third goal of the season into the cage.
New Hampshire (1-2) led 1-0 at halftime.
Sophomore forward Lindsay Peirson (North Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial) tied the game at 1-1 with her first collegiate goal at the 62:46 mark. Classmate Meredith Gettel (Rehrersburg, Pa./Tulpehocken) tipped the ball over to Peirson for the assist.
The score remained tied at 1-1 for the next seven minutes of regulation and through an entire 15 minutes of overtime. The Wildcats forced one corner in overtime and outshot Syracuse, 5-3, during the first overtime session.
Stamp tallied the game-winner just 1:09 into the second overtime. Lizzy Duffy fired a shot that was saved by SU goalkeeper Audrey Latsko (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus). Stamp was on the right post for the rebound. Her first shot was stopped by Syracuse midfielder Jackie Sheaffer (Richfield, Pa./Middleburg), but she stayed with the play and converted her second opportunity.
In the first half, SU senior midfielder Kristin Aronowicz (Exton, Pa./Downingtown) had a penalty stroke saved by UNH goalie Christine Buckley.
Buckley and Latsko each finished with seven saves.
The Orangewomen will take their 1-1 record to Skidmore on Wednesday, Sept. 11, when they take on Albany at 7 p.m. New Hampshire plays Stanford at 1 p.m. at Coyne Field on Sunday, Sept. 8.
