SYRACUSE, N.Y. ? Sophomore #Hakim Warrick# and freshman #Carmelo Anthony# each notched their second-straight double-doubles as they led 25/-- Syracuse to a 76-69 upset win against 11/11 Missouri, Monday night in front of 18,756 at the Carrier Dome.
Clinging to a four-point lead, 61-57, with six minutes left in the game, SU used a pair of three-point buckets by freshman #Gerry McNamara# and another one by Anthony, along with a free-throw by Warrick to give the Orange a 14-point margin, 71-57. The Orangemen managed to hold the Tigers at bay down the stretch to come up with their 11th-straight win. The last time the Orangmen defeated a nationally-ranked team was last season in the Preseason NIT when they beat 15th-rated Michigan State, 69-58. Syracuse last won against a No. 11 team on March 11, 1989, when SU defeated Seton Hall, 81-78.
Warrick finished with a team-high 20 points and added 10 rebounds. Anthony scored 16 points and grabbed 11 boards. Three other Orangemen finished with double-digits in the scoring column: sophomore #Craig Forth# (11 points), McNamara (14), and senior #Kueth Duany# (10). Forth finished with a career-high four assists and added three blocks and five rebounds. McNamara tied his personal best with four steals to go along with seven assists.
After a game-opening dunk by Forth, Syracuse and Missouri traded baskets for the first seven minutes of the game. A pair of baskets from Anthony and sophomore #Josh Pace# gave the Orangemen a six-point lead, 17-11, midway through the half. The Tigers came back with seven straight points, including five by Ricky Clemons, to take a one-point advantage, 18-17. Another Forth dunk gave the lead back to Syracuse, and five-straight field goals by Warrick helped the Orangemen stay ahead of Missouri for the remainder of the half. SU entered intermission with a five-point advantage, 36-31.
Missouri?s Clemons led all players with 26 points along with seven assists. Arthur Johnson posted a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Paulding finished with 11 points and three assists.
Syracuse takes to the road on Saturday, January 18, to face BIG EAST foe 3/3 Pittsburgh at noon.
