The Syracuse women's swimming and diving team lost its first dual meet of the season, a 132-111 decision to Connecticut at Ted Webster Pool. The Orangemen lost their second consecutive dual meet, as the Huskies posted a 140-101 victory.
Juniors Elyse McDonough (Delmar, N.Y.) and Spencer Raymond (Idstein, Germany) each won three events for the Orange. McDonough kept her dual-meet unbeaten streak alive. With first-place finishes in the 100 freestyle (53.07) and 200 freestyle (1:53.67) against Connecticut, she remained perfect this season at 12-for-12 in individual dual-meet races. All in all, McDonough has won 22 of her last 23 individual dual-meet events, dating back to Nov. 3, 2001, when she finished second in the 200 IM to Florida Atlantic's Marina Mulyayeva.
McDonough also helped SU's 400 medley relay team to a first-place finish against the Huskies with a time of 3:55.62. Senior Jennifer Jonusaitis (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario), sophomore Rachel Wrede (Dover, Del.) and freshman Christina Jansen (Santa Barbara, Calif.) were the other three swimmers involved.
Raymond scored first-place points for the Orangemen in the 50 freestyle (21.39) and the 200 breaststroke (2:10.62). He teamed up with freshmen Bobby Schelling (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Ryan Caponera (Latham, N.Y.) and sophomore Mike Anstrom (Springfield, Va.) to win the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:28.72.
Jansen was first in the women's 50 freestyle (25.10).
SU's young 400 freestyle relay team featuring rookies Kristi Westrich (Lincolnshire, Ill.), Claire Wong (Vancouver, British Columbia), Lisa Wittich (St. Louis, Mo.) and sophomore Lisa Fong (Olympia, Wash.) combined to capture first place with a time of 3:38.75.
Next Saturday, February 1, Syracuse will host Seton Hall in dual-meet action. Swimming will begin at 2 p.m. at Ted Webster Pool, while diving will start at 2 p.m. at the Sibley Pool in the women's building.
The SU women own a 6-1 dual-meet record this season, while the men are 4-3.
