
Field Hockey Wins First BIG EAST Game of the Season

PROVIDENCE, RI --The Syracuse University field hockey team defeated Providence, 1-0, in BIG EAST Conference action on Oct. 17. It was the Orangewomen's first league win of the season. The Friars fell to 8-8 overall, 0-3 in the BIG EAST, while Syracuse improved to 5-8 overall and 1-3 Â in the conference.
The Orangewomen scored the lone goal of the game with 21:55 remaining in the first half on a penalty corner. Â Michelle Sola (Blandon, Pa./Oley Valley) received a pass from Meredith Gettel (Rehrersburg, Pa./Tulpehocken) at the top of the circle and took a direct shot on goal. Â The ball took an odd bounce off the grass and slipped past PC's keeper for the score. Â The goal proved to be decisive as both teams were held scoreless the remainder of the game.
Providence outshot Syracuse, 11-6. Â The two teams were even on penalty corner attempts with eight apiece.
Senior goalkeeper Meaghan  Moran made one save for Providence, while SU junior Betsy Wagner (Cherry Hills, Colo./Colorado Academy) recorded five saves for the Orangewomen. Â
Syracuse stays on the road and will play at Dartmouth on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 1 p.m.
