CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Syracuse women’s soccer team (8-6-1, 2-2-1 BIG EAST) lost to BIG EAST Northeast Divsion foe Miami, 2-1, on Sunday Oct. 19 at Cobb Stadium. Miami’s Lindsey Yach scored the game-winner on a penalty kick at 82:03.
Sophomore Kristina Cristofori netted SU’s goal, sixth of the season. Junior Natalie Galas recorded an assist on the play, moving her to within one helper of tying Stacy Shanning (1996-98), Molly Schmelzle (1998-2001) and teammate Erica Mastrogiacomo for 10th on the Orangewomen’s all-time assists list.
Britney Butcher opened the scoring for Miami when she knocked home a pass from Yach to give the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead at 32:56. Cristofori evened the score, 1-1, when she took a pass from Galas and beat Miami keeper Alex Alford at the 71:54 mark. The game remained tied until Butcher drew a penalty kick at 82:03 after SU keeper Emily Kowalczyk tackled her inside the box. Yach coverted the penalty kick opportunity to provide the margin of victory. It was the first penalty kick scored against the Orangewomen in 25 matches, dating back to SU’s contest with Central Florida in 2002.
Kowalczyk was issued a red card on the play, forcing her to leave the game and pressing Cristofori into service as the team’s goalkeeper for the final 7:57 of the contest. Syracuse’s backup goalkeeper Shannon Myers was unable to play due to an injury she suffered in warmups.
Butcher led the Hurricanes with a game-high five shots. Alford made nine saves in the match to earn the victory.
Kowalczyk made six saves for the Orangewomen.
Syracuse outshot Miami 16-13 and held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.
The Orangewomen will play Colgate in a non-conference match on Wednesday, Oct. 22. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
