SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse men's soccer team will play its final non-conference game of the season when the Cornell Big Red comes to the SU Soccer Stadium on Wednesday, October 22. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
The Orangemen have only two home games left this season. SU currently has a 2-1-3 record at home. Syracuse is coming off a 0-1-1 week with a 1-1 tie against 13th-ranked Rutgers and a 4-1 loss at Georgetown.
SU's final home game of the 2003 season is on Sunday, October 26 at 1 p.m. versus 22nd-ranked Connecticut.
BRUNO HAS BEST WEEK OF YOUNG CAREER
Freshman midfielder Frank Bruno led the Syracuse offense with three points on a goal and an assist in their two games. He netted SU’s goal in its tie at #13 Rutgers and then notched his first career assist against Georgetown. Bruno is the Orangemen’s leading scorer this season with seven pointson three goals and an assist. He has either scored or assisted on SU’s last three goals.
KARIM SHUTS DOWN SCARLET KNIGHTS
Sophomore goalkeeper Alim Karim tied his career high with 12 saves in SU’s tie with 13th-ranked Rutgers. Karim made seven stops in the first half. Karim first recorded 12 saves last season versus Colgate. Karim made several keys plays late in regulation and in overtime to preserve the tie. He has played all but one game this season, recording a 1.47 goals against average in 1289:27 minutes of play. Karim has 61 saves and four shutouts in 2003.
EVANS FINDS THE NET
Sophomore forward Jeff Evans scored his first goal since the Colgate game, denting the back of the net versus Georgetown. The goal established new single-season career highs in goals (2) and points (4) for the second-year player. He had one goal and two points as a rookie. It was the first time in his career that Evans scored and the Orangemen lost.
FEHRLE PRESERVES TIE WITH RUTGERS
Senior defender Chris Fehrle saved a would-be game-winning goal in the first overtime versus the Scarlet Knights when he cleared the ball from a Rutgers player who recovered a rebound 10 yards from the SU goal line with an open net. SU was able to hold on and record a tie against the 13th-ranked team in the nation. Fehrle started both games last week, his first starts since the Adelphi game on September 13. Fehrle has started seven times in his first season back at Syracuse after transferring back from Virginia. Fehrle played with SU in 1999 and 2000 then was with the Cavaliers in 2001. He was at SU last season, but did not play because of NCAA tranfer rules.
UNPRECEDENTED OVERTIMES
Syracuse played its seventh overtime game of the season against Rutgers. The Orangemen are 0-2-5 in overtime this season. SU has gone to double overtime six times this season, the most since Dean Foti took over the program in 1991. This season’s seven overtime games are also the most of the Foti Era.
SCOUTING THE BIG RED
Cornell is on a four-game unbeaten streak heading into tonight’s action. The Big Red are 3-0-1 in that stretch, going 2-0-1 in the Ivy League. They defeated Yale, 1-0, in their last game, winning for the first time in New Haven in 28 years. Scott Palguta and Steve Reuter lead the team in scoring with six points each. Palguta has three goals, while Reuter has two goals and two assists. Ian Pilarski paces the Big Red with four assists. Eight different players have scored goals this season for Cornell. David Mahoney has played every minute in goal this season for the Big Red (830:00). He has a 1.08 goals against average and four shutouts.
