Lauren Henderson, the BIG EAST Conference's leading scorer, tallied two goals in Connecticut's 2-1 victory against Syracuse at J.S. Coyne Stadium. The loss knocked the Orangewomen out of contention for a BIG EAST Tournament berth for the first time since the championship format began in 1989. Syracuse had been the only team to qualify for all 14 BIG EAST Championships up until this year.
SU is 6-10 on the season, 1-4 in the BIG EAST Conference. The Huskies improved to 13-4 overall, 3-1 in the league and are a lock for the conference tournament.
Henderson put Connecticut on top, 1-0, with her penalty-corner goal with 23:18 remaining in the first half. Abby Ostruzka and Mary Jo Malone assisted on the play.
Syracuse quickly tied the score at 1-1 when senior forward Ann-Marie Guglieri (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) used a reverse stick to slap in a crossing pass from freshman forward Ashley Fry (Douglassville, Pa./Oley Valley) just 2:38 after UConn struck.
The eventual game-winning goal was registered with 1:27 remaining in the first half when Kelly Stolle's crossing pass was tapped over to Henderson by Malone.
Neither team would score again during the final 35 minutes.
SU had two penalty-corner opportunities in the second period. The first corner play was disrupted by a UConn player. The second attempt, a high flick up into the air by SU's Joanne Lombard (Ambler, Pa./Gwynedd Academy), was knocked away by Husky goalkeeper Maureen Butler.
Syracuse's junior goalie Betsy Wagner (Cherry Hills, Colo./Colorado Academy) totalled five saves, while Butler finished with four. Connecticut outshot the Orangewomen, 13-5.
Head coach Kathleen Parker's team has two games remaining this season. Their last home game is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 29, against Cornell, at 7 p.m. The Orangewomen travel to Evanston, Ill. to take on Northwestern at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2.
