Peirson Scores in Overtime as Field Hockey Defeats Cornell, 2-1

Junior midfielder Lindsay Peirson (North Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial) scored her second goal of the season just 32 seconds into the second overtime period to give Syracuse (7-10) a 2-1 come-from-behind victory against Cornell at J.S. Coyne Field.

It was the second game-winning overtime goal of Peirson's career. Last season, she scored the game-winner in overtime against Ohio State.

Neither team scored in the first half. Cornell got on the scoreboard early in the second period. Carissa Mirasol punched in a rebound off SU goalie Betsy Wagner's (Cherry Hills, Colo./Colorado Academy) pads at the 36:40 mark. Wagner stopped the Big Red's initial penalty-corner shot, but Mirasol was there for the rebound.

With 5:19 remaining in regulation, Syracuse tied the score at 1-1 when sophomore sweeper Michelle Sola (Blandon, Pa./Oley Valley) netted her sixth goal of the season off a penalty-corner shot that was set up for her by senior midfielder Jackie Sheaffer (Richfield, Pa./Middleburg).

In the first overtime session, SU junior forward Meredith Gettel (Rehrersburg, Pa./Tulpehocken)attempted three of the Orangewomen's six shots. Cornell survived the barrage, which included four corner opportunities for Syracuse.

Just 32 seconds into the second overtime period, SU gained control and Gettel looked as if she were going to shoot again, but the ball squirted over to Peirson who was wide open for the game-winning shot.

Cornell lost its fourth-straight contest and is 3-11 on the season.

Syracuse has one game remaining on its schedule. On Sunday, Nov. 2, the Orangewomen will play Northwestern in Evanston, Ill.
