SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women’s soccer team (9-8-1, 2-3-1 BIG EAST) lost its regular-season finale to Princeton (10-1-3, 3-1-1 Ivy League), 3-1, at the Syracuse Soccer Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 29.
Junior Shana Thomas scored SU’s goal. It was the fifth tally of her career. She finished the season fourth on the squad with 11 points. Sophomore keeper Emily Kowalczyk made seven saves to boost her season total to 49.
Princeton’s leading scorer Esmerelda Negron got the Tigers on the board 5:18 second into the game when she received a pass from Maura Gallagher and found the back of the net to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. The match remained 1-0 until Princeton’s Sylvia Morelli lobbed a ball toward the Syracuse goal. It deflected off the head of Syracuse defender Sarah Elnicky and into the net to give the Tigers a 2-0 advantage at the 22:48 mark.
The Orangewomen cut the lead to one in the second half when Thomas received a pass in the midfield and sped past the Princeton defense. She beat Tigers’ goalkeeper Madeline Jackson one on one to cut the lead to 2-1 at 49:43. That was as close as the Orangewomen would get. Princeton sealed the match 27:18 later when Elizabeth Pillion settled a pass, cut to the middle of the field and found Emily Behncke, who beat Kowalczyk with a blast from the 18 at 77:01.
Princeton outshot the Orangewomen 15-4 and held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.
The Orangewomen finished the season with a record of 9-8-1. It is the seventh time in eight seasons SU has finished the year with a winning record.
