SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The tandem of juniors Kelly McGrorey and Shawna O’Brien placed third at the second-annual Syracuse Smash pairs race held on Nov. 1 at Onondaga Lake. The pair completed the 3K course with a time of 11:47.
Besides the Orangewomen, Boston University, Connecticut, Cornell, Navy, Dartmouth and Rutgers all sent teams to participate in the event.
Boston University’s pair of Leanna Berger and Rachel Heckl won the competition with a time of 11:40, while Cornell’s Sarah Greer and Corbin Schrader finished second crossing the finish line at 11:44.
Junior Anna Goodale and sophomore Ineke DeSimone placed fifth with a time of 11:54 and the team of sophomore Lindsey Heumann and junior Liz Kellogg placed 15th, posting a time of 12:16.
"We started this race last year to give more meaning to our student-athletes for all the pairs training we do, head coach Kris Sanford said. “More and more universities are training in pairs all fall, so there has become a greater need for this type of event.”
McGrorey and O’Brien won last year’s race with a time of 12:15.9.
The Orangewomen will close out their fall season on Sunday, Nov. 9 when the freshmen will compete at the Belly of the Carnegie in Princeton, N.J. and the varsity races at the Head of the Lake in Seattle, Wash.
