
Four Football Orangemen Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District I Team

Romeo, a graduate student, is pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering and is a three-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team selection. He has also been a member of SU’s Athletic Director’s Honor Roll eight times. Romeo has started all 44 games of his career and ranks fifth on the list for consecutive starts for a collegiate lineman. This season he has anchored an offensive line that is blocking for the 12th-best rushing offense in the nation, (214.9 yards per game) and has only given up seven sacks in eight games, which leads the BIG EAST. Romeo is also a candidate for the Rimington Award, which is presented to the nation’s top center.
Thomas, a senior, has been named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team twice and is an eight-time member of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. He has 105 career tackles, including 18 for a loss. He is tied for the team lead with three sacks this season, including two against Pittsburgh, which tied his career high. Thomas also participates in a number of community service projects, including a pen pal program for middle-school children. He is majoring in psychology.
Scanlon, a senior, has been named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team three times. He is a 2003 team captain and leads the squad with 90 total tackles. He is tied for sixth on SU’s career tackles for a loss list with 21. As of games played through Nov. 8, Scanlon ranked 13th in solo tackles with 7.88 solo stops per game and is tied for 21st in total tackles with 11.25 per contest. Against Louisville on Sept. 13, he posted a career-best 16 tackles. Scanlon is majoring in health and exercise science and also participates in the Habitat For Humanity community service program.
Tarullo, a junior, is majoring in psychology. He is a two-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team pick and a six-time member of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. He has participated in community service projects that have ranged from being a Shadow Day Speaker for sixth and seventh graders to being a volunteer pee-wee wrestling coach. He has started the last 20 consecutive games and is part of an offensive line that has helped the Orange average 30.25 points per game, which ranks second in the BIG EAST.
The CoSIDA Academic All-District I Football Team is compiled from NCAA Division I football squads from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont. To be nominated a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore starter or significant reserve and have a 3.20 cumulative grade point average.
The Orangemen will play at No. 14 Miami on Saturday, November 15. The game will begin at 12:00 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN Regional Television.
