MIAMI, Fla. - Junior running back Walter Reyes scored his 15th rushing touchdown of the season on a one-yard run with 9:40 remaining in the second quarter to give Syracuse a 10-7 lead against No. 14 Miami at halftime.
Senior linebacker Rich Scanlon got the ball for SU when he recorded his first career interception, picking off Miami quarterback Derrick Crudup. Scanlon caught the ball at the Orangemen's 35-yard line and return it seven yards to bring SU's offense on to the field at the 42-yard line. Junior Collin Barber connected on a 32-yard field goal to give Syracuse a 3-0 lead with 6:51 left in the first quarter.
SU forced Miami to punt on its next possession, but the kick pinned the Orange inside its own one-yard line. Syracuse was forced to kick it away after not picking up a first down.
On the first play of the Hurricanes' next possession, Crudup threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Moore to give Miami a 7-3 edge with 1:37 remaining in the quarter.
SU punted the ball away as the clock wound down in the first session. The Orangemen regained the ball when Kellen Pruitt recovered a fumble at Miami's 45-yard line to set up Reyes' touchdown.
The two teams traded punts on the next three possessions. On SU's next drive, R.J. Anderson threw his fourth interception of the season when Maurice Sikes caught the ball at Miami's 48-yard line with 40 seconds left in the half.
Syracuse's defense has put plenty of pressure on both of Miami's quarterbacks. Early in the second quarter, senior Christian Ferrara sacked Crudup for a loss of three yards. Late in the first half, senior Louis Gachelin recorded the 17th sack of his career when he put Brock Berlin back nine yards. The stop moved him into a tie for eighth on SU's career sack list with Ted Gregory (1985-88).
