
Orangemen Lose, 17-10, at No. 14 Miami

MIAMI, Fla. - Junior running back Walter Reyes rushed 24 times for 89 yards and a touchdown in Syracuse's 17-10 loss to No. 14 Miami in front of 48,130 at the Orange Bowl. Reyes surpassed the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the season, marking the second year in a row he has accomplished that feat. His touchdown was his 15th of the season, which ranks second on SU's single-season record list.
Senior quarterback R.J. Anderson completed 12-of-21 pass attempts for 85 yards. Senior tight end Joe Donnelly caught two passes for a game-high 27 yards. Senior wide receiver Johnnie Morant extended his streak of consecutive games with a reception to 26. He also returned one kickoff 29 yards and had 56 all-purpose yards on the day. Redshirt freshman Brendan Carney had a career-long 64-yard punt and averaged a personal-best 50.4 yards on seven punts in the game.
Syracuse's defense maintained pressure on both of Miami's quarterbacks. Early in the second quarter, senior Christian Ferrara sacked Derrick Crudup for a loss of three yards on a first-and-10 near midfield. Ferrara finished with a game-high three tackles for a loss of six yards. Late in the first half, senior Louis Gachelin recorded the 17th sack of his career when he put Brock Berlin back seven yards to bring up third-and-14 from the Hurricanes’ 17-yard line. The stop moved him into a tie for eighth on SU's career sack list with Ted Gregory (1985-88). Sophomore Ryan LaCasse made his first sack of the season when he hit Crudup 13 yards behind the line of scrimmage to bring up third-and-20 for the Hurricanes in the fourth quarter.
Senior linebacker Rich Scanlon recorded his first career interception, picking off Crudup on the Hurricanes’ opening possession. Scanlon returned the interception six yards to bring SU's offense on the field at the Syracuse 42-yard line.
Reyes accounted for 27 yards on the ensuing SU scoring drive, including 15 yards rushing. The biggest play of the series came when Anderson completed a 16-yard pass to Donnelly to give SU a first down at Miami’s 13-yard line. Junior Collin Barber connected on a 32-yard field goal to give Syracuse a 3-0 lead with 6:51 left in the first quarter. It marked the first time SU scored first against Miami since the 1998 game when Dee Brown ran 23 yards to give Syracuse a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
Miami took the lead at the 1:37 mark of the first quarter on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Crudup Ryan Moore.
Sophomore Kellen Pruitt recovered a fumble at Miami's 45-yard line and the Orange offense converted the turnover into a touchdown. Reyes capped the drive with his 15th rushing touchdown of the season on a one-yard run with 9:40 remaining in the second quarter to give Syracuse a 10-7 lead at halftime.
Miami scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, including a 44-yard field goal by Jon Peattie with 12:30 remaining and a nine-yard touchdown run by Tyrone Moss with 8:08 left on the clock to make the final score 17-10.
Syracuse will host BIG EAST foe West Virginia at the Carrier Dome this coming Saturday (Nov. 22).
