
Scanlon and Romeo Named to CoSIDA Academic All-America Football Team

Scanlon, who has earned his degree in health and exercise science, maintains a 3.70 grade point average. He is leading the Orangemen with 139 tackles, including 89 solo stops, in 2003. Scanlon ranks seventh on SU’s career tackles for a loss list with 22.5 tackles for a loss of 92 yards in nearly four seasons.
Romeo, a graduate student with a 4.00 GPA in engineering management, earned his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering with a 3.57 GPA. He has started all 47 games of his career at the center position. Romeo has anchored the offensive line that has blocked for a 1,000-yard rusher a school-record four consecutive seasons. In 2003, Romeo has helped protect Walter Reyes in his second straight 1,000-yard season.
SU has had eight student-athletes earn 10 CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. In 1960, Fred Mautino became the Orangemen’s first first-team selection. Howard Goodman earned a spot on the first team in 1971. Tony Romano was selected to the first team in 1983. Tim Green became SU’s first two-time selection, earning first-team honors in 1984 and 1985. Pat O’Neill was named to the first team in 1993. Mark Baniewicz earned second-team honors in 1998, and was selected to the first team in 1999.
