SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The #15 Orangemen (20-4, 10-3 BIG EAST) registered the 25th 20-win season in head coach #Jim Boeheim#'s 27-year tenure with an 89-51 victory against West Virginia (13-12, 4-9 BIG EAST) on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at the Carrier Dome. Syracuse remained undefeated at home, and retained a share of the lead in the BIG EAST's West Division.
Freshman #Carmelo Anthony# recorded his 15th double-double of the season with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore #Hakim Warrick# and senior #Kueth Duany# each finished with 18 points, and Duany moved six points away from becoming the 45th SU player to score 1,000 points in his career. Freshman #Billy Edelin# recorded 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists on the night. The Orangemen scored nearly half their points in the paint, edging West Virginia 42-16.
The Orangemen defense held the Mountaineers to 20.7 percent shooting and 17 points in the first half. SU used a 19-5 run starting at the 10:45 mark of the opening session to close out the period. Duany scored eight of his 13 first-half points in the streak, and Warrick added six in the run.
After the break, WVU's Drew Schifino connected on a three-pointer to cut SU's lead to 15, but that was as close as the Mountaineers would get. Syracuse's biggest advantage was 41 points (its largest of the season), 77-36, at the 6:04 mark. All 15 SU players saw action in the game.
Schifino finished with 10 points for West Virginia. Kevin Pittsnogle had nine points and nine rebounds, and Josh Yeager scored nine points off the bench for the Mountaineers.
Syracuse will play rival Georgetown on March 1 when the Orangemen travel to Washington, D.C. for a 1:00 p.m. game.
