SYRACUSE, NY -- Junior co-captain Spencer Raymond (Idstein, Germany/Singapore American School) set a Webster Pool record in the 100-yard breaststroke as the Syracuse men's swimming & diving team defeated Villanova, 142-87. The Villanova women, paced by senior Maddy Crippen's three pool records, posted a 133-109 victory against the Orangewomen, who lost only their second dual meet of the season.
Raymond won three events for the Orangemen. His time of 58.02 in the 100 breaststroke broke a 2000 Webster Pool record set by Massachusetts' Billy Brown (58.08). Raymond also won the men's 50-yard freestyle (21.31) and was part of the first-place 200 medley relay team (1:35.23).
The lone senior on the SU swimming team this year, Jennifer Jonusaitis (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada/Mount St. Joseph) celebrated Senior Day by turning in the best time of her career in the 100 breaststroke. She nearly beat Crippen, a 2000 U.S. Olympian. Jonusaitis finished 16 tenths of a second behind Crippen, recording a career-best time of 1:05.98. Earlier this season, Jonusaitis set the pool record in the 100 breaststroke against Colgate with a time of 1:06.80.
Crippen set Webster Pool records in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.82), the 1,000 freestyle (10:05.60) and the 400 individual medley (4:22.84). The 400 IM was the event she finished sixth in at the 2000 Olympics.
Also setting a Webster Pool record was Villanova's Becky Koch in the 500 freestyle. She won the race in a time of 4:54.66.
It was the final home meet of the season for the Orange, who will now gear up for the 2003 BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships on Feb. 20-22, in Uniondale, N.Y. The men finished the season with a 5-4 dual-meet record this year, while the women ended up 7-2.
