
Lillis Scores Game Winner In 12-11 Victory Against No. 3 Virginia

SYRACUSE, NY - Junior Danielle Lillis scored the game-winning goal with five seconds left in the first half of the overtime period to give the No. 14 Syracuse women’s lacrosse team a 12-11 win against No. 3 Virginia.
The Orangewomen (1-0) defeated the Cavaliers (0-1) for the second straight year. SU is now 2-3 in the all-time series against Virginia and 2-4 in season openers.
Lillis scored a career-high four goals in the win, including two free-position scores. Senior Kim Wayne recorded a team-high six points (one goal, five assists). Junior Leigh-Ann Zimmer followed with three goals and one assist.
Syracuse trailed, 11-8, with 5:10 left in regulation after Lauren Aumiller found the back of the net for the first time in the game. Lillis started the comeback for the Orange with a free-position goal followed by an unassisted tally by sophomore Monica Joines to bring SU within one, 11-10. Zimmer tied the game at 11-11 with 1:30 left in the second period. Lillis notched the game-winning goal on a free-position attempt in the first three-minute period of the overtime.
The Orangewomen led by as much as four, 5-1, at the 16:33 mark after senior Jessica Trombley scored her first goal of the season. Virginia rattled off three straight goals to come within one at the half, 5-4. Wayne started off the scoring 1:32 into the game off an assist by Zimmer.
Senior co-captain Carla Gigon made 13 saves in goal for the Orangewomen, including one at the end of the overtime to seal the win.
Cary Chasney led Virginia with six points (four goals, two assists. Amy Appelt followed with three goals and two assists.
Syracuse returns to action on Tuesday, March 4 when it faces Virginia Tech on the road.
