
Orangewomen Defeat Hokies, 8-7

SALEM, VA - The Syracuse University women’s lacrosse team won its opening BIG EAST game with a 8-7 victory against Virginia Tech on Tuesday afternoon at Roanoke College.
The Orangewomen increased their record to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in The BIG EAST Conference, while the Hokies stood at 0-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
Juniors Leigh-Ann Zimmer and Cristine Doran led the scoring for the Orangwomen with two goals each. Zimmer also dished out an assist.
Junior Danielle Lillis scored her only goal of the game at the 44:55 mark to break a 7-7 tie and put SU up for good. The game went back and forth between the two teams with three lead changes.
Zimmer started off the scoring for the Orangewomen at the start of the game. After goals by sophomores Courtney Palladino and Jessica Bell, SU held a 3-1 advantage.
The Hokies took its first lead of the game,4-3, by notching three consecutive goals with seven minutes remaining in the first half. The Orangewomen responded with three of their own goals to give them a 6-5 halftime lead. Virginia Tech tied the game twice in the second stanza but goals by Zimmer and Lillis kept SU one goal ahead.
Kate Threadgold and Lindsey Welch each scored two goals for the Hokies. Virginia Tech outshot SU, 22-20, and had a 32-19 advantage in groundballs.
Syracuse returns to action on Saturday, March 8 when it faces Maryland at 1 p.m. at College Park.
