Orangewomen Lose to 15th-Ranked Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Syracuse softball team lost its final game of the Seminole Challenge to host Florida State, 6-1, on Sunday, March 2. The Orangewomen are 2-6, while the 15th-ranked Seminoles are 13-6.
The Orangewomen finished the tournament with an 0-3 record. They lost twice to Mississippi State (4-1, 3-2) before taking on FSU.
Seniors Julie Dunn (Springfield, Ill./Springfield) and Christina Holowich (Castro Valley, Calif./Moreau Catholic) had Syracuse's only two hits in the game.
Florida State jumped out early in the bottom of the first inning. Shandra Colzie led off the inning with a bunt single and moved to third on a double by Tatiana George. Brandi Stuart walked to load the bases, and Jess van der Linden drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to right field. DiMaggio was able to pitch out of the inning without further damage by inducing two fly balls.
The Orangewomen used two errors to knot the game at 1-1 in the top of the second. Freshman shortstop Alexis Switenko (Blue Anchor, N.J./Winslow Township) reached on an error by the FSU right fielder. She moved all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt by Dunn and scored on an error by the Seminoles' third baseman on a pick-off attempt.
The Seminoles came right back to take the lead in the second inning. Shundra Colzie drew a one-out walk and then stole both second and third. Bryttani Lindheiim walked to put runners on the corners. Colzie scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. FSU tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third on a two-RBI double by Lesley Palmer.
Florida State scored in the fifth on an RBI single by Julie Tiggis and plated an unearned run in the sixth after a double, a walk and an error.
Senior Tara DiMaggio (Hopwell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) was the losing pitcher for the Orangewomen. She is now 2-3 after giving up three runs on four hits in two and one-third innings. DiMaggio struck out one and walked five. Casey Hunter got the win for the Seminoles, striking out 11 and walking one. She is now 10-3 with the complete-game two-hitter.
Sophomore Taylor Petersen (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) made her first appearance of the weekend. She tossed three and one-third innings of relief, allowing one run on five hits. She struck out three and walked three.
Syracuse is off until March 10 when it open its spring trip versus Evansville at the UCF Spring Fling in Orlando, Fla.
