
SU To Retire Sherman Douglas' Jersey

Douglas will be on hand for the team’s annual Hardwood Fund Dinner on Monday night, March 10, at the OnCenter. He is scheduled to receive the 2003 Victor Hanson Medal of Excellence at the dinner.
“Sherman is probably the greatest competitor I have ever coached,” said Coach Jim Boeheim. “He willed good things to happen. Sherman made himself into a great college basketball player.”
He ranks first assists (960), second in steals (235) and fourth in scoring (2,060 points) on SU’s career lists. He owns the school records for season assists (326, 1988-89) and game assists (22 vs. Providence, 1989). He was a three-time first-team All-BIG EAST selection, made the BIG EAST All-Tournament team three times, and was the BIG EAST Tournament MVP in 1988.
Douglas earned All-America recognition three times during his SU career. He was a 1987 honorable mention pick by AP and The Sporting News. After the following year he earned second-team laurels from UPI and Basketball Times, third-team notice from AP and honorable mention honors from The Sporting News. In 1989, he was a first-team AP and Wooden, and Basketball Weekly, third team NABC, and honorable mention UPI and The Sporting News.
Douglas was the point guard for the 1986-87 Syracuse team that played in the NCAA championship game. He was an All-Final Four team pick.
