“Cornell and Navy are two of the toughest crews we’ll face this year,” Syracuse head coach Dave Reischman said. “They’re going to be tough races. We need to be ready for them.”
Last weekend, in SU’s first home action of the spring, the Orangemen won two of three races against Rutgers, but surrendered the Ten Eyck Trophy after losing the varsity race. The JV eight is 2-1 on the spring season, while the freshmen eight won its first race in three tries against the Scarlet Knights.
One of the oldest trophies in Syracuse history, the three schools began a yearly competition for the Goes Trophy in 1955. Navy won the inaugural race, and 20 times after that over a 47-year span. The Midshipmen captured the trophy in 10 of 11 races between 1979 and 1989. Cornell has won the trophy 19 times, including a decade of dominance in the ‘60s, with nine consecutive wins between 1962 and 1970. The Big Red have held the Goes Trophy the last two years. The last time the Orangemen brought home the trophy was in 1999. SU has triumphed in this matchup seven times.
Clifford “Tip” Goes, Syracuse class of 1914, created the Goes Trophy in 1955 to honor coaches James Ten Eyck of Syracuse, Charles Courtney of Cornell and Richard Glendon of Navy. Goes coxswained the varsity eight which won the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta in 1913. He had a life-long interest in rowing and served as chairman of the U.S. Olympic Rowing Committee.
The race for the Goes Trophy between the three teams’ varsity eights will begin at 8:00 a.m. The JV eights will race at 8:15, and the freshman eight race will start at 8:30. Cornell and Navy will compete against each other in two races, a third varsity event at 8:45, and a second freshman race at 9:00 a.m.
