Game One (BC 8, SU 0)
Game Two (BC 1, SU 0)
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Syracuse softball team lost both ends of its BIG EAST doubleheader at Boston College, 8-0 in five innings and 1-0, on Sunday, April 27 at Shea Field. SU is now 14-22 overall and 4-10 in the conference, while the Eagles are 27-15 overall and 11-2 in league play.
Junior Rachel Park doubled in the first inning of game one to extend her season-best hitting streak to eight games. She ran the streak to nine games with an infield single in game two. Park's hitting streak is only two games shy of tying her own school record of 11 games. Freshman Alexis Switenko singled her first time up in the second game, marking her first one-base hit in conference play. Switenko now has eight hits in BIG EAST games, six of them home runs.
Senior Tara DiMaggio was the loser for SU in game one. DiMaggio went one-third of an inning, allowing six runs, four of which were earned, on five hits. DiMaggio (9-12) struck out one and walked one. Kim Ryan (13-4) was the game-one winner, allowing only one hit and striking out nine.
Junior Haley Larsen took the loss for the Orangewomen in game two despite allowing only one unearned run. Larsen (1-5) gave up four hits and struck out five in six innings. Tekae Malandris (9-6) was the winner for Boston College, allowing four hits and striking out four in five and two-thirds innings. Ryan came on in relief in the sixth inning to earn her second save of the season.
SU's loss in game one was only the third time this season the Orangewomen have been shutout. It snapped a 19-game string of scoring at least once. The shutout in game two marked the first time the Orangewomen were blanked in both games of a doubleheader since April 8, 2001 versus Notre Dame.
Boston College jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Lisa Fischer, Erin Mackey and Lisa Field drove in the first three runs for the Eagles before Kimmy Hopkin delivered a bases-loaded single to plate two more. BC scored the sixth run of the inning on a passed ball. The Eagles scored twice more unearned runs in the third inning. Jacqui Goodchild plated a run with a single and Jen Asbury added a sacrifice fly.
The Eagles scored first in the second game with an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning. The Orangewomen's best chance to tie the game came in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman Cassie Morales knocked a two-out double down the left-field line. Senior Christina Holowich followed with a single up the middle, but pinch runner Jenn Read was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
The Orangewomen will travel back to Storrs, Conn. to face the UConn Huskies on Monday, April 28. The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played on Saturday, but was postponed due to rain.
